The Peaks for a
Purpose climbing team will attempt it’s
inaugural climb
to the summit of the third
highest peak in North America,
the 18,700ft.
Mexican volcano El Pico de Orizaba! Orizaba
is
the seventh most topographically prominent peak
in the world,
rising nearly 11,000ft. above
Mexico City.
This impressive volcano maintains
it’s glacial snow all year long
requiring
the
use of special climbing gear. Although this
mountain is considered “non-technical”,
it is no
walk in the park
there is not much oxygen to
breathe at this elevation.
To best prepare our bodies to endure the stress induced by
lack of
oxygen
and minimize the effects of acute
mountain
sickness we will gain elevation slowly.
Upon arriving in Mexico City, we will drive to
the base of
Mexico’s third highest volcano, Iztaccihuatl at about 8,000ft.
We will slowly
work our way up in elevation for three or
four
days,
summiting Iztaccihuatl at 17,343ft.
Our
bodies will get a break as we spend a night back
at 8,000ft
before heading
towards the base of
the big one, Orizaba!
Before losing the benefits
gained from acclimatizing,
we will begin
ascending again.
We hope to make the summit of
Orizaba in three days.
We will be carrying
banners bearing the logos of our corporate
sponsors
all the way to 18,700ft. for some nice
photo opportunities!
